Promoting an effective study method (Year 5)

The learning and study skills acquired during primary school constitute an essential foundation for success in further studies. A good study method helps students develop the ability to learn effectively and systematically. Furthermore, it contributes to the development of fundamental skills, promotes independence, and reduces study-related stress.

Throughout this final year of the PYP (Primary Years Programme), particular importance is given to this aspect. The aim is to encourage students to work independently, fostering personal responsibility and self-confidence.

Targeted activities have been proposed for this purpose, such as becoming familiar with the art of taking notes while listening to a lecture, watching a video, or reading information on the internet. “Annotating only key concepts, abandoning neat handwriting, paraphrasing, using abbreviations, capturing visual attention with certain strategies…” are some of the techniques brought to the children’s attention before the screening of the “Superquark” video where Piero Angela addresses the topic of energy (Unit of Inquiry 1). Subsequently, each student reviewed, reworked, and rewrote their notes independently, aware that 50% of the study had been completed. The next step: preparing for the oral presentation!

Throughout the year, students will be consistently encouraged to use this technique as an important aspect of their study habits, even when conducting web research. This, along with various other study strategies like highlighting, rereading texts, summarizing, creating concept maps, and confidently presenting their knowledge orally using appropriate language, will be fostered. They may also seek assistance from an adult as a listener, a peer, or record themselves in a video.

To promote a strong approach to studying, children will also be encouraged to take responsibility for their learning. This includes planning tasks, gathering necessary materials, and submitting work on time, always aiming to be a positive model of study and organization. Additionally, the importance of providing positive feedback to students should be considered: recognizing and rewarding their efforts in developing their study method will motivate them to continue improving.

Promuovere un metodo di studio efficace

Le abilità di apprendimento e studio acquisite durante la scuola primaria costituiscono una base essenziale per il successo nel proseguimento degli studi. Un buon metodo di studio aiuta gli studenti a sviluppare la capacità di apprendere in modo efficace e sistematico, inoltre contribuisce allo sviluppo di abilità fondamentali, promuove l’indipendenza e riduce lo stress legato agli studi.

Nel corso di quest’ultimo anno del PYP viene assegnata particolare importanza a questo aspetto, in quanto si desidera incentivare gli studenti a lavorare in modo autonomo, incoraggiandone la responsabilità personale e la fiducia in sé stessi.

Sono state a tal fine proposte attività mirate, come ad esempio acquisire dimestichezza con l’arte di prendere appunti ascoltando una lezione, guardando un video o leggendo informazioni in internet. “Annotare solo i concetti chiave, abbandonare la bella grafia, scrivere in parole proprie, utilizzare abbreviazioni, catturare l’attenzione visiva con alcuni stratagemmi…..” sono alcune delle tecniche portate all’attenzione dei bambini prima della proiezione del video di “Superquark’ in cui Piero Angela affronta il tema dell’energia (unit 1). Successivamente ogni studente ha rivisto, rielaborato e riscritto i propri appunti in modo autonomo, consapevole che il 50% dello studio era stato fatto. Gli studenti durante il corso dell’anno verranno costantemente incentivati ad utilizzare questa tecnica come aspetto importante del loro metodo di studio, anche quando effettueranno ricerche nel web; ciò unitamente ad altre diverse strategie di studio, come sottolineare, rileggere i testi, fare riassunti e mappe concettuali e saper esporre oralmente le proprie conoscenze con sicurezza e proprietà di linguaggio, avvalendosi per questo anche dell’aiuto di un adulto come ascoltatore, di un compagno o registrandosi in un video.

Ma per promuovere un buon metodo di studio i bambini verranno anche incoraggiati ad essere responsabili del proprio apprendimento. Questo include la pianificazione dei compiti, la raccolta dei materiali necessari e la consegna dei lavori in tempo, cercando sempre di essere per loro un modello positivo di studio e organizzazione. Da tenere anche in considerazione l’importanza di un feedback positivo agli studenti : riconoscere e premiare i loro sforzi nello sviluppo del metodo di studio li motiverà a continuare a migliorare.
