Discovering oneself through art: a journey of exploration and self-portrait (Y4)-Artistic Influence Unit

At the heart of our educational experience at H-FARM International School, we embarked on a fascinating journey of self-discovery, starting from the “fil rouge” of the mirror. This simple, yet powerfully symbolic tool, allowed the fourth-grade children to reflect on their identity, connecting them empathetically through the sense of sight. The power of reflection: The exploration of the mirror As part of this inquiry unit, the students initially engaged in an extraordinarily complex and equally evocative exercise. In front of a mirror, one at a time, they had to answer a question that goes to the heart of self-awareness: “Do I really know in depth the person I see reflected?”. This question pushed them to look inside themselves, to reflect on their own experiences, emotions, fears, and aspirations.

While observing their own reflection, the children entered into an inner dialogue with their own ego. This process was fundamental for their personal development, as it helped them to better understand who they are and how they want to be.

In the reflection emerged from these activities, we had the opportunity to explore numerous themes related to the perception of oneself and others… Perhaps the way we see ourselves is not always the same as how others see us! From exploration to creation: The self-portrait The culmination of this experience was the self-portrait, but not a conventional self-portrait… The students worked on the creation of an “inner/outer self-portrait”, a work of art that incorporated their self-reflection and their sense of self. This was not just an artistic exercise, but a journey into self-expression and self-understanding.

The inner/outer self-portrait required the children to reflect on the characteristics that represent their inner identity: their emotions, their interests, their values. At the same time, they had to consider how this inner identity was reflected in the outer appearance.

The meaning and importance of the inner/outer self-portrait This type of self-portrait has a deep meaning and importance. Firstly, it helps the children to understand that their identity goes beyond the physical appearance. They learn that what they are inside is just as important, if not more, than how they appear to others. Secondly, art was a means of expression that allowed the children to communicate what might be difficult to express verbally.

It provided them with a safe space to explore their emotions and facets of their identity. In conclusion, the educational experience has shown how the creative use of the mirror and the self-portrait can be powerful tools to help children explore their identity, improve their self-awareness, and develop a sense of self-expression through art. This type of learning goes well beyond traditional subjects, preparing children not only for academic success but also for a life of self-discovery, empathy, and creativity.

Alla scoperta di sé stessi attraverso l’arte: un viaggio di esplorazione e autoritratto (Y4-Artistic Influence Unit)

Nel cuore della nostra esperienza educativa presso H-FARM International School, abbiamo intrapreso un affascinante viaggio di scoperta di sé stessi, partendo dal “fil rouge” dello specchio.

Questo strumento semplice, ma potentemente simbolico, ha permesso ai bambini delle classi quarte di riflettere sulla loro identità, connettendoli in modo empatico attraverso il senso della vista.

Il potere del riflesso: L’esplorazione dello specchio

Nell’ambito di questa unità di inchiesta, gli studenti si sono inizialmente impegnati in un esercizio straordinariamente complesso e ugualmente evocativo. Davanti ad uno specchio, uno alla volta, hanno dovuto rispondere ad una domanda che va al cuore della consapevolezza di sé: “Conosco veramente a fondo la persona che vedo riflessa?”. Questa domanda li ha spinti a guardare dentro loro stessi, a riflettere sulle proprie esperienze, emozioni, paure e aspirazioni.

Mentre osservavano il proprio riflesso, i bambini sono entrati in un dialogo interiore con il proprio ego. Questo processo è stato fondamentale per il loro sviluppo personale, poiché li ha aiutati a capire meglio chi sono e come desiderano essere.

Nella riflessione emersa da queste attività si ha avuto modo di esplorare numerose tematiche relative alla percezione di sé stessi e degli altri…

Forse non sempre il modo in cui noi ci vediamo è lo stesso di come ci vedono gli altri!

Dall’esplorazione alla creazione: L’ autoritratto

Il culmine di questa esperienza è stato l’autoritratto, ma non un autoritratto convenzionale… Gli studenti hanno lavorato alla creazione di un “autoritratto interiore/esteriore”, un’opera d’arte che ha incorporato la loro auto-riflessione e il loro senso di sé. Questo non è stato solo un esercizio artistico, ma un viaggio nell’auto-espressione e nell’auto-comprensione.

L’autoritratto interiore/esteriore ha richiesto ai bambini di riflettere sulle caratteristiche che rappresentano la loro identità interiore: le loro emozioni, i loro interessi, i loro valori. Allo stesso tempo, hanno dovuto considerare come questa identità interiore si rifletteva nell’aspetto esteriore.

Il significato e l’importanza dell’autoritratto interiore/esteriore

Questo tipo di autoritratto ha un profondo significato e importanza. In primo luogo, aiuta i bambini a comprendere che la loro identità va oltre l’aspetto fisico. Imparano che ciò che sono dentro è altrettanto importante, se non di più, di come appaiono agli altri.

In secondo luogo, l’arte è stata un mezzo di espressione che ha permesso ai bambini di comunicare ciò che potrebbe essere difficile da esprimere verbalmente. Ha fornito loro uno spazio sicuro per esplorare le loro emozioni e le sfaccettature della loro identità.

In conclusione, l’esperienza educativa ha dimostrato come l’uso creativo dello specchio e l’autoritratto possano essere strumenti potenti per aiutare i bambini a esplorare la loro identità, migliorare la loro consapevolezza di sé e sviluppare un senso di auto-espressione attraverso l’arte. Questo tipo di apprendimento va ben oltre le materie tradizionali, preparando i bambini non solo per il successo accademico, ma anche per una vita di auto-scoperta, empatia e creatività.

Federica Rossi is currently an Italian teacher in the PYP at H-FARM International School. After graduating from a scientific high school, her interest in young minds and teaching led her to earn a Master’s Degree in Primary Education Sciences from the University of Padua. During the 21/22 school year, she conducted a research project in the institute with the two third classes focused on augmented reality in support of learning. This research highlighted multiple opportunities offered by this technology to deepen knowledge through the direct visualization of the concepts learned.
